California Oral Examination
At its quarterly meeting on August 18, 2001 in Sacramento, the California Board of Psychology voted to proceed with the rulemaking process to eliminate the oral examination component of the licensing process. This action followed years of review aimed at determining 1) the value of an oral examination and 2) whether the existing oral examination sufficiently complies with sound psychometric principles.
The above decision makes this web page obsolete. I will keep it active as a historical document and as a sort of self-congratulation. No doubt that my efforts and the efforts of other psychologists who loudly and persistently objected to the Board's reign of error are largely responsible for this welcome change. It does not, however, take away the hundreds of thousands of dollars and endless misery that was expended by hundreds of psychologists who were unjustly subjected to the irrelevant and abusive process that was the oral examination for those who did not pass it in the first few attempts. An apology would be appreciated. (Click here for my final letter to the Board)
THE PURPOSE OF THIS WEB PAGE IS TO CREATE A FORUM FOR
DISSATISFIED PSYCHOLOGISTS WHO WISH TO PRESSURE THE BOARD OF PSYCHOLOGY
TO CEASE ITS QUESTIONABLE PRACTICES IN THE ORAL EXAMINATION
PROCESS.
THE MANDATE OF THE BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL CODE PSYCHOLOGY LICENSING LAW, SECTION 2900, IS: "...TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC FROM THE UNAUTHORIZED AND UNQUALIFIED PRACTICE OF PSYCHOLOGY..."
THERE IS GROWING SENTIMENT THAT WITH THE ORAL EXAMINATION PROCESS THE BOARD IS EXCEEDING ITS MANDATE AND PURSUING INSTEAD A "GATEKEEPING" POLICY AIMED AT REDUCING THE NUMBERS OF LICENSED PSYCHOLOGISTS COMPETING FOR JOBS; THE PUBLIC WOULD BE BETTER SERVED IF THE BOARD LIMITED ITSELF TO DENYING LICENSES TO THOSE WHO CAN BE OBJECTIVELY SHOWN TO BE UNQUALIFIED TO PRACTICE.
THIS IMPORTANT ISSUE DESERVES A HOME PAGE OF ITS OWN. I AM WILLING TO ADMINMISTER IT UNTIL ENOUGH PEOPLE BECOME INVOLVED AND DONATE FUNDS AND/OR TIME TO RUN IT. PLEASE ASK ME HOW YOU CAN HELP.
